Language Arts

St. Elizabeth’s Middle School ELA students will understand the importance of comprehending literature through the study of grammar, letter and report writing, vocabulary, and spelling. Oral communications is another facet of the ELA curriculum. Students in grades 6, 7, and 8 are required to memorize several poems and speeches. The students learn about the authors and the other works they are noted for.

In Grammar, students study all aspects of punctuation, nouns, pronouns, adjectives, predicates, adverbs, and sentence structure. Composition includes instruction in the various genres of writing and practical application.  A vocabulary unit, studied approximately every two weeks, enlarges each student’s word knowledge. Each week, all students study a spelling unit upon which they are tested.

Students are evaluated through chapter tests, workbooks, quizzes, homework, orals, class participation, and writing assignments.
